Guide for Zapier

Zapier monitoring: alerts when a Zap errors, turns off or stops running

A Zap that hits an error stops at that step, and a Zap that keeps failing can be turned off. Either way the last step never runs. Put a LastPing ping there, and the missing ping becomes an alert.

What this catches

  • A step that errored: the Zap stops at the failing step, the final ping never fires, and the incident opens when the window passes.
  • A Zap that was turned off: no runs, no pings: the same incident, instead of weeks of silence.
  • A trigger that stopped firing: an expired connection or a changed source sends nothing; with a silence floor that opens an incident too.
  • Recovery: the next successful run closes the incident on its own.

Set it up

Create a monitor that matches the Zap

For a Zap on Schedule by Zapier, create a monitor with the same schedule and a grace window. For a Zap triggered by events, set a silence floor: the longest normal gap between runs. Copy the ping URL.

Add a Webhooks by Zapier step at the end

Add an action step after the last one: app Webhooks by Zapier, event GET, URL your ping URL. Webhooks by Zapier needs a Zapier plan that includes it.

App: Webhooks by Zapier
Event: GET
URL: https://ping.lastping.dev/<uuid>

Optional: ping start after the trigger

A second Webhooks step right after the trigger, calling /start, arms a maximum runtime for a Zap that starts and never finishes.

App: Webhooks by Zapier
Event: GET
URL: https://ping.lastping.dev/<uuid>/start

Good to know

The ping is a plain GET, so it needs no body, header or key. Alerts go to email, Slack, Discord, Telegram, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, a signed webhook, or a push to your phone through ntfy or Pushover.

Questions people ask

  • How do I get alerted when a Zap stops working?

Add a Webhooks by Zapier GET step at the end of the Zap that calls your LastPing ping URL, and give the monitor the Zap's schedule or a silence floor. When the Zap errors, is turned off or stops triggering, the ping does not arrive and LastPing alerts you.

  • Does LastPing see the data my Zap handles?

No. The step sends a GET to the ping URL with nothing else in it.

  • Is it free?

Yes. LastPing is free for individuals, with no monitor cap. Webhooks by Zapier needs a Zapier plan that includes it.
